Why liquefy natural gas?
By liquefying natural gas, its volume is reduced approximately 600 times. This makes it easier and cheaper to transport over long distances by ship and to store it in large quantities. To turn LNG back into natural gas, it is processed in a regasification plant. After regasification (a process that is also called vaporization) the gas is distributed to households and industrial consumers.
Frequently Asked Questions LNG
-
Why use LNG?
LNG has been used for more than fifty years (particularly in the United States and Japan).
-
Why liquefy natural gas?
By liquefying natural gas, its volume is reduced approximately 600 times. This makes it easier and cheaper to transport over long distances by ship and to store it in large quantities.
-
Where else in the world is LNG used?
LNG reception terminals can be found all over the world, particularly in Japan, but also in Korea, India, the United States, France, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Italy en Turkey.
-
Where does LNG come from?
LNG is obtained mainly from areas where large quantities of natural gas have been discovered such as North Africa, the Middle East and the West Indies.
-
What is the difference between LNG and LPG?
Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is often confused with LNG and vice versa.
-
What is LNG?
LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) is natural gas that has been turned into a liquid.
-
What is an LNG terminal?
An LNG terminal includes various elements: a quay or jetty where LNG tankers can moor to be unloaded, LNG storage tanks, a regasification unit (or vaporizer)...
-
What emissions will the operations cause?
Once the LNG Terminal is operational, emissions into the atmosphere will consists mainly of combustion emissions resulting from to the combustion of sulphur-free natural gas.
-
LNG is safe?
The LNG industry has an excellent safety record stretching over many decades. This holds for all the elements of the LNG chain, from transportation to storage and regasification.
-
Is LNG flammable?
When stored in storage tanks, LNG cannot explode or burn because no oxygen is present.
-
How will LNG be distributed to households and industrial consumers?
Before the LNG can be fed into the national gas grid, it must be converted back onto a gas.
-
How safe are LNG ships and LNG terminals?
The LNG industry has an excellent safety record thanks to the properties of LNG, the materials used and standards followed, and the close supervision on the enforcement of these standards.
-
How is natural gas liquefied?
At the location where it is extracted or from which the LNG is shipped, the natural gas is cooled down in a very large cooling system (liquefaction plant) to minus 162 degrees...
-
How is LNG stored and cooled?
LNG is stored in large insulated tanks that are specially designed for this purpose. The tanks are so-called "full containment" tanks.
